Carrier of Memories is an installation that explores different notions of home as a place of belonging, privacy, shelter, and transition. It draws on the artists’ personal family histories, as well as research and practice developed during residencies at Draíocht Arts Centre (INCUBATE Studio Residency) and Nordic Artists’ Centre Dale.
The work combines video, sound, and installation to explore both fictional and biographical ideas of home, drawing on audio recordings, interviews, stories, and memories. These multiple sources are reflected in the range of media used, with a strong emphasis on the performative. They also contribute to the installation’s layered meanings and varied perspectives on home — both public and private, physical and psychological. These include home as dwelling place, property, the human body, memory, and the subconscious.
As curator Sharon Murphy notes, the work acknowledges the complex relationship to home, both as a term and as a lived reality: from a secure sense of place to varying degrees of displacement.
